1) You have experience with dogs
Regardless of whether you had a miniature dachshund as a child, or have surrounded yourself with dogs your entire life and perhaps even worked in an animal shelter: highlight your experience with dogs on your profile. Don't forget that there are many different types of dogs that require a dog sitter, so there's bound to be one that matches your knowledge and experience. 2) You know your own limitations
Small, sweet natured, female dogs: these are a doddle for every dog sitter. But can you handle large, headstrong males? Or powerful pooches with boundless energy? Be honest with yourself about your knowledge and experience. Some dogs are fearful, don't get along with other dogs, try to run away, whilst others are headstrong, unpredictable, stressed or aggressive. Think carefully about whether you're that 'firm' and confident dog sitter who knows enough about dog behaviour to be able to handle strong personalities.

3) You have sufficient dog-friendly walking routes in your local area
Dogs need to be walked 3 to 4 times a day. Are there enough parks, off-lead zones or other suitable dog walking routes in your local area?

4) Your house is both safe and dog-proof
Naturally this is irrelevant for those solely providing a dog walking service. If you're a dog sitter who additionally offers a boarding service, however, then it's important to make sure that your home is safe. This also means that there is sufficient space, there are not too many (different types of) pets in your home, they are never left alone with each other, there are plenty of comfortable places for the dog to snooze and it's okay for the odd mishap to occur on your carpet or couch. In other words, your house must be dog-proof and a genuine home away from home for your canine companions!

5) You have a strong sense of responsibility
It can be extremely hard for a dog owner to leave their beloved four-legged friend with a stranger. Trustworthiness is therefore the most important attribute for a pet sitter. As a dog sitter, you're responsible for the welfare of the dog throughout the entire booking and, in effect, become its temporary 'owner' during this period. You must be contactable at all times and know what to do in the event of an emergency. You should also respond quickly to messages, be clear and polite in your communication, answer any questions and show a personal interest in both owner and dog. We recommend sending photo updates via the app throughout the dog's stay. This reassures the owner that the dog is happy and comfortable in your company.
