About Catarina
Animals have always been a huge part of my life, and caring for them is something I genuinely love. Alongside that love, I have professional and hands-on experience with dogs of many different breeds, sizes, ages and temperaments.
I previously worked at Groom & Coffee, a dog daycare and grooming space, where I helped care for around 20–25 dogs every day. My responsibilities included supervising groups of dogs, walking, feeding, bathing, brushing and monitoring their behaviour and wellbeing throughout the day. Working with so many dogs at once also taught me how to recognise body language, manage different personalities and energy levels, and notice quickly when a dog needs space, rest or extra attention.
I also volunteered for one month with BAWA in Bali, where I worked with rescued dogs, including fearful, traumatised and behaviourally challenging animals. This experience made me particularly comfortable with dogs that need patience, clear boundaries and calm, predictable handling.
I am also the owner of a young Cane Corso, so I am very comfortable with large and powerful breeds. I also have two Labradors back home in Portugal and have cared for everything from very small dogs to giant breeds, as well as cats.
For daycare or boarding, I follow each pet’s normal routine as closely as possible, including feeding times, walks, medication, rest periods and any training or household rules provided by the owner. I supervise pets carefully throughout the day and adapt the level of interaction to their personality. Dogs that enjoy activity can have longer walks, play and mental stimulation, while older, shy or anxious dogs can have a calmer environment and more rest.
Because I have my own dog, introductions with visiting dogs are always handled carefully. I never simply put unfamiliar dogs together. I prefer a gradual introduction, ideally beginning outside on neutral ground with a parallel walk before allowing closer interaction. I monitor their body language closely and, if either dog appears uncomfortable, I am happy to keep them separated and manage their routines individually. I will never force interaction between dogs.
Sleeping arrangements are also adapted to what the pet is accustomed to. If a dog normally sleeps in their own bed, crate or another specific area, I will maintain that routine whenever possible. I want pets to experience as little disruption as possible while their owners are away.
For dog walking, I offer individual walks adapted to the dog’s age, health, energy level and usual routine. Walks can generally be around 30–60 minutes, although I am happy to adjust this for puppies, senior dogs or particularly active dogs.
For home visits, I can feed pets, refresh water, walk dogs, clean small pet-related messes, play with them, give affection, brush or bathe them and administer medication when required. Visits can normally last around 30–60 minutes, and longer visits can also be arranged for pets that need extra companionship or supervision.
For house sitting in the owner’s home, I respect the home as carefully as I respect the animals. I follow all instructions regarding doors, windows, keys, alarms and access to the property, and I always make sure the home is properly locked and secure whenever I leave. I also keep the owner updated and am happy to send regular photos and messages so they know how their pet is doing.
I always ask owners beforehand about feeding, allergies, medication, behavioural issues, reactivity, recall, triggers, walking habits and any special requirements. I would much rather know too much about a pet than too little.
If an owner would like their dog to have more social interaction, I can also arrange selected walks together with my own dog when appropriate. This would only ever be done after a careful introduction and with the owner’s permission.
I am responsible, proactive and very attentive, but most importantly I genuinely enjoy spending time with animals. Whether your pet is energetic, shy, anxious, senior, huge, tiny or simply convinced they own the entire house, I adapt to their personality and make sure they feel safe, comfortable and cared for.
